Treat this surgery just as you would any other surgery or wound. If the penis appears to be healing as a cut on the arm would and that there is no infection and you don't see anything that looks like an infection then keep this area dry as possible. You made a good decision in having the cricumsion completed. Clinical studies now are very clear the the cirumsized male has less of a problem with sexually transmitted disease.

If you see an infection at all call the doctor.

My son was just circumcised on the 18th of Jan, and it is completely healed already. It took about 7-10 days. He is 6 weeks old though, so it probably will take your son a little longer to heal. It will look really gooey at first, but the skin down there heals really fast, so in a few days it should look a lot better. Make sure to give him Tylenol for the first 24 hours. Good luck :)

It was done to me 51 years ago, when I was 6 years old and I might get used to it after another 51 years, but I doubt it.

It is too late now but you should know that his doctor is an idiot and a quack. A competent doctor can treat the rare problems of an intact penis with out surgery(they can do it for girls without cutting). When a doctor says that circumcision is necessary find a different doctor! European doctors don't cut off foreskins for just any reason, they must be better trained I guess.

Parents often wonder why their children seem to hate them, if this should happen to you, you won't have to wonder. I am 57 years old, I still cannot stand to sleep on my back, if I try I get the feeling that someone can get at me. Do I harbor resentment toward my mother? Yes I do, and if that damn doctor wasn't already dead he would be.

Again it is too late now, but you should know that there is a very real risk of loss of sensitivity as this study shows.

Exerpts from the report:
Masood S, Patel HR, Himpson RC, Palmer JH, Mufti GR, Sheriff MK.
OBJECTIVES: Currently no consensus exists about the role of the foreskin or the effect circumcision has on penile sensitivity and overall sexual satisfaction. Our study assesses the effect of circumcision on sexually active men and the relative impact this may have on informed consent prior to surgery.
Penile sensation improved after circumcision in 38% (p = 0.01) but got worse in 18%, with the remainder having no change. Overall satisfaction was 61%.
CONCLUSIONS: Penile sensitivity had variable outcomes after circumcision. The poor outcome of circumcision considered by overall satisfaction rates suggests that when we circumcise men, these outcome data should be discussed during the informed consent process. 2005 S. Karger AG, Basel

I would recomend getting a second opinion before having this done, it is very rare to actually need to have the foreskin amputated. Competent doctors can treat an intact penis without cutting. One out of five men circumcised suffers loss of sensitivity and one out of three is not satisfied with the results, these are not very good odds. There has to be better treatments available. The same damage is done when an infant or child is circumcised but it will years before the problem will show up, and then the connection may not be made to the original cause.

I would point out that while this study shows that adult men should be warned of the possibility of sensitivity loss before they can give "informed consent" to circumcision, there is no way that a newborn boy, or a young boy can give his informed consent to an elective procedure that has a 1 in 5 chance of leaving him with an impaired sex-life.

His body. His choice.

Treat it like a surgical scar (that is what it is). It looks worse than it is and he will certainly be fine. I don't have a good answer about the recovery other than I don't remember anything. I was too young to remember or understand why I went through that. He is too young and probably like most boys his age, quite resilient. Just keep checking for infection....probably wont happen. And keep being a great Mom!!!!

This child have a father? This question should only be asked of a doctor. How would any man know how long it took to recuperate as it is done at birth. It is gauze. This is a silly question for a "mother" to be asking. Get a responsible man in his life now, a godfather who is under 40 and can talk to a four year old so that they have an immediate understanding. Also, at five this kid is not going to want his mother to be checking him out. Medical questions are asked of medical doctors or nurses.

It will take a while for the stiches to heal, but clean it reguarly, possibley 2 times aday to keep it from getting it infected then when its time bring him to the doctors and talk to him. Good lUck! Good thinking about getting it done younger, its hurts while older.

Okay, in all honesty...

You're pretty much stuck with either going for follow-up to make sure he looks "normal," or having someone else with knowledge of that region on a 4-year-old look at it.

If it looks fine, then it probably is. If it's not inflammed, or showing signs of infection
then It's ok. Ask your doctor if you're concerned.
For his sake all I can say is Ouch! It will be sore
sore a while. Age 4? Why?

You circumcised him at 4? He will remember this the rest of his life. I know someone that this happened to at a young age. He still recalls the horror of it. Was there a medical reason to have this done this late after birth?
