I rent an apartment that has no smoke alarms, and no fire extinguishers. If a fire starts, I will burn. I know the law says these things are supposed to be here, should I report the violation, or just let the place burn my stuff, then call my lawyer ?

No. If you burn down your apartment, you go to jail. Report the violation, start by calling the local fire department. (Unless you haven't talked to your landlord about it yet.) But you might want to check you lease first, as you'd be surprised what some landlords put in as tenant responsibly. Usually is up to tenant to replace batteries and maintain etc., but if they've never been installed it's most likely landlords obligation.
Check lease
Discuss with landlord
Call fire dept--they will direct you to some tenant act complaint dept. probably. But if they know violations are in existence, they will sometimes send an inspector and fine appropriate peoples. If they do send someone over, make sure your not blocking anything or have any personal belongings on public landing (ie shoes boots outside door) or you will also be fined under another violation. Make sure you have no fire type hazards in your apartment either. Good Luck. By the way I think fire extinguishers are the tenants problem.

I seriously hope you are kidding, posting a question like this and then intentionally setting your place on fire is the best way to get caught and spend plenty of time in jail. Don't you ever watch CSI? :). Anyway, call your land lord, have it installed, or report him if he/she doesn't install them. If something tragic were to happen and people died you would spend a lot of time in jail....get renters insurance if anything (legal) does happen your policy will cover it and you won't have to worry about suing your landlord. Lawsuits to get rich are not the answer!

Well, if you do burn down your apartment, you can get free room and board, compliments of Uncle Sam, but it's kind of like Hotel California. You can check in, but you can never leave.
