make up about 5-10% of the american population, why do we have to give the minority the rights of the majority? i'm basically talking about right to have civil unions, raise kids. the thing that scares me is that soon they will be teaching about homosexuality in elementry schools. and i don't want my three children subjected to this.

just to let you guys know about me, i'm not religious, my uncle is gay, my step dad has hiv, and i think along with religion, my children should make up there own mind when they are old enough to understand the results of there actions. and to me homosexuality is simple if the parts don't fit you don't put them together

With regard to civil unions, "we" need to create and then respect rights taken for granted for others, because to not do so is wrong. Given that some significant percentage of the population is gay or lesbian, not sure the percentage any more than you, then it is inhuman to tell them (a) they cannot have same sex relationships or (b) they can but they cannot expect any of the legal protections or privileges the rest of us in committed relationships get from the law, banks, hospitals, the government and so on. I assume from the way you phrase it that you're not scared that some guy is going to take advantage of the spousal inheritance estate tax exemption when his partner of forever dies. You say your concern is something else. Ok.
With regard to the right to raise kids, you actually seem to imply that "we" should consider not granting gays that right. The whole point of a right (as opposed to an institution like civil unions that we create) is that the majority can't take it away, let alone decline to grant it. It is not a right if "we" can take it away from them because we feel like it.
In particular, raising your own children is a right. You cannot take away the collective right of gay and lesbian parents to raise their children. I mean, I suppose you could, but it would be an act of evil. Our government is not supposed to seize children from parents without a damn good reason, not even one at a time. Collectively!?
And you say the thing that scares you is that they'll teach homosexuality in the elementary schools. Odd, because neither civil unions nor gay parenting has a direct influence on elementary school curricula. Granted, some schools get into it too early, but that is to be taken up at the school board, where you can advocate not teaching about it until later, like high school or at all. If "we" are in the majority, then we can not have that stuff taught. Your question doesn't make sense if that is what concerns you. Your question should have read something like "At what age, if at all, should questions about homosexuality and its acceptance, be discussed in public schools." Public schools because if your three are at private school, you can shift 'em.
But that's not what you ask. You ask about denying them the institution of a protected legal relationship and denying them the right to be parents. I don't think you are concerned your kids will be exposed to a lesson at school. I think you are concerned your kids will find out at some point that they are in a society that tolerates homosexuals at all. You seem to want them to grow up in a society that ostracizes them.
Well, that is a thing being debated now. As much as it is my choice, it will be a tolerant society. As one of "we," that is what I advocate. To act otherwise is wrong. I'm sorry if you don't like your kids finding out but if, as you say, 5% to 10% are gay, then that is how it is.

The reason we should give 5-10% the rights of the majority is because it is constitutionally guarenteed, that's why. As far as the rest of what you have to say it's like this in my opinion, we either have an open honest debate & treat our children like people, you know having honest truthfull discussions with them about life's issues or we leave them ignorant, I want smart kids so I talk to them, it's called PARENTAL RESPONSIBILTY and it's YOUR JOB. We teach our kids to understand that people really ARE DIFFERENT and why the differences exist and in our personal opinions what is right or wrong about those difefrences. And yes some differences are wrong but I don't count being gay as one, pedophiles on the other hand, well you get my drift, I think you should search a little deeper I think that while you have had encounters with gays you still have a certain amount of phobia over it, the tone of your question indicates this pretty readily
Mahal says I only met a dozen or so gays but 10 thousand people, I think you met a lot of closeted gays or your GAYDAR isn't very good..........lol

Wow. It's all you guys here that are intolerant. You're intolerant of the idea that some people believe there is such thing as right and wrong as applied to sexual behaviors. You're intolerant of any belief that does not condone living however you please.
Gay people have the right to marry. A gay guy is not restricted from marrying a woman. Don't know why he would want to, but he has the same right to marriage as the law defines it. Allowing truly gay marriage would only further erode our crumbling society. Children need a mom and dad, not moms or dads. Sure marriage is a disaster in this country, but that has no relevance as to the rightness or wrongness of gay marriage. Just because a good thing is done poorly doesn't mean a bad thing should be allowed to be done, even if it's done well.
Unfortunatly, you will all probably get your wish soon, but then you will have only yourself to blame for the results.
Does this make me intolerant? Absolutely not. There is no excuse for "hating" gays or treating them like subhumans, nor do the majority of people who oppose gay marriage do so. The problem is that many people think not giving them the right to marry can be equated with that. Gay people should be treated with the same love and respect all others are treated. But this does not mean we have to let them marry. They should be lovingly and respectfully told that it will not be allowed. Sorry, there is such thing as right and wrong and just because you want to do something does not mean it is right to do so.
And to answer your question, you could probably homeschool your children. And that doesn't necessarily mean you yourself have to do it. I think there are many groups of people, often associated with churches that can provide homeschooling, or Christian schooling if that is what you want. There is some sense that your children could be a little too sheltered. That's a tricky problem to address.

I really believe that you should raise your kids to learn how to deal with the REAL world. The real world has a lot of things that you or they might find distasteful but they exist. Teach your children to recognize diversity and, using the values of love and tolerance you have taught them, they will be able to make their own decisions about things when situations arise.
I don't think you need worry about "teaching homosexuality" in elementary school. First off, homosexuality isn't "taught". Secondly, most schools have classes on sexuality that are age and grade appropriate. It is called "education" and is a good thing.
Your three children will be subjected to many, many things as they mature. It should not be your goal to "protect" them from these things; rather to teach them how to cope they arise.

Are you serious? If so, let me ask you this: if you had a brother or sister who was gay and you loved this sibling very much, wouldn't you want him or her to have the same legal rights that you have? And would you let your three children be around your sibling? I would hope so.
Gay people are just like us. They are not a danger to little children, and it is a good thing for children to learn (at the appropriate age) about the different kinds of people (racially, age-wise, gender, sexual orientation, different religion) that live in the world. They should be taught to stay true to their own values but to be tolerant of people who are different from them.
As another example, black people make up about 10% of the population, so should we overturn all the gains made by the civil rights movement because they are a minority?

I have nothing against gays who aren't predetors. (I have something against predators.) However, in California last year they tried to pass a law that would have required that gay people not only be tought about in schools, including elementary schools as young as kindergarten, but that whenever teaching about a person who was gay, they would have been identified as such. THAT made me mad. I am against brainwashing and against the state determining the age my children should have sexuality shoved in their faces. At my kids' school they were learning Tchaikovsky in kindergarten. He would have had to be dropped or become 'the gay composer'. My kids were not asking questions about sexuality yet, and that would not have been where I would have wanted to start at that age.
Mind you I was also pissed when the California legislature had a huge book banning at schools to weed out anything 'politically incorrect'. (We'd just raised enough money for a new school library, but once the books were gone through for politically incorrect ones, we might as well have saved the money.)
Books banned included all books on Teddy Roosevelt other than one on the Spanish American war (he hunted.) Now the national parks were all the doing of Lincoln and John Muir, did you know? Even the picture on the California quarter of John Muir near Yosemite is identical to a famous one -- only with Teddy Roosevelt taken out.

Wow!!!!
Another opps in the question block!!!!
blacks only make up about 20% to 30% of the population, surely you are not suggesting that a population base that is not the majority needs to have fewer civil rights than that of the majority, we had that at one time in the united states it was called slavery.
what will be the next minority that you attack and say that should not have the save civil rights as a citizen that is the member of the majority, and just who gets to decide what characteristics make up a citizen of the majority?
WOW!! Let us call a bigot a bigot!!!

Why would they be teaching homosexuality in the classroom when so many classrooms don't teach sexuality at all. Also, where in our consitution does it say that we should descriminate against 5 to 10% of the American people on basic rights like choosing what other adult you want to marry? If you get the right to marry, why shouldn't they? If this group of people are so small in our culture, why does it bother you so much what this 5 to 10% of the American population does with their lives and with other consenting adults? My god, live and let live will ya.
BTW, 5 to 10% is not "MAINSTREAM".

Why not give the same rights? isnt america suppose to be free and EQUAL rights for everyone? I have absolutely no clue where you people come up with if gays are allowed to marry it will destroy hetero marriages.-- the only one who can destroy a hetero marriage are the people in that marriage. Why do most republican hetero's think that gay marriage will destroy their marriage? are you that insecure about your marriage?
Why do most republican hetero's think that gay couples will raise gay children? well how many gay couples raise kids? very few right? then if gay couple are the only ones to raise gay kids then how did a homosexual come about? hmmmmmmm makes ya wander dont it. that is another bad example from hetero's to "protect" their rights.
Does elementary schools teach about hetero relationships? the closest thing they teach is sex ed.
Just because you feel that teaching someone or telling someone about same sex relationships does not mean that person will be gay. when are you people going to come up with something that actually make sense instead of this bs you call proof. when are you going to stop being so freaking close minded and see that ones sexuality does not rub off onto others.
Did you know that the ones who complain the most against same sex marriages, are the ones who are the most insecure in their own marriage?
Did you know that the ones who hate and discrim against homosexuals are the ones who are the most insecure in their own sexuality?
Stop coming up with the same ole stuff, and try and come up with something real............

One could apply the same logic to other minorities, such as those of African descent. It wouldn't make it any more right.
Why shouldn't they be allowed the same rights? I may not agree with the lifestyle, but that doesn't mean that I feel it's acceptable to discriminate.
I do understand your fear of having it taught to your children though. There are two solutions to that:
1. Don't send them to public school. Send them to a parochial school, or home-school them.
OR
2. Just teach them your values at home, and make sure you leave the lines of communication as open as possible.
That's really all you can do.
