Its tax time again and this year is a bit different than last. I have finacially been responsible for my 3 year grandson while his mother as a young mom lived with me until nov 2006. Is it morally right to claim both of them as dependents or should I let my daughter claim him while during 2006 she was in her last year of high school. I am feeling selfish, if i do this however being a single person my self I could really use it

Tax law specifically states that the person who provides financial support is the one who is entitled to the deduction.

However, you should see which makes more sense and which would be more beneficial. Would your claiming them as dependedents be more or less advantageous to your tax liability? Or would it be more advantageous for your daughter to file as head of household. Suggest you ask a tax person to see who would benefit the most.

It's not a matter of morality, right or wrong. It's a matter of what's best for your financial situation as a family.

Morally right, it is and I don't doubt for a minute you deserve it. We have 2 grandson's that basically we took care of everything it takes financially to raise a child. You love them as much as your own kids. But I fear, legally you cannot claim them as a tax credit. Talk to a person that prepares taxes for people. They will know. I'd hate to see you get in trouble as we all know the IRS is ruthless.

You can claim both your grandson and your daughter (if you provided more than 50% of her support). You may also be eligible to file as Head of Household. Don't feel that you are being selfish, this is something that you are entitled to by the rules of the IRS. Anyone who provides more than 50% of someones support entitles them to file H of H. Go for it.

you should do it for you. You were the one who took responsibility for financialy taking care of them both. Explain to her that as a single older american your benefits have been declining on a regular basis and if she is a decent woman she will know what is the right thing to do. Good luck.

If you are providing their support, you are entitled to claim them. End of story.
