The mass increases from the increase in energy you have to put in the system to move it that fast. Since energy = mass times speed of light squared, the more energy you put into moving the more mass and speed.

But what others are saying is that as you near the speed of light it takes an incredible amount of energy which we see, if we are on the outside, as mass. At the speed of light the energy and mass would have to be an infinite amount to move. Since we don't know how you would get infinite energy to move an infinite mass, we believe that nothing with mass can equal the speed of light which is pure energy without mass.

When an object gets close to the speed of light, it stops gaining speed (as much) and starts gaining mass. Speed and mass are both forms of energy, so the energy increase remains the same. If the object did not gain mass, then it would have to increase in energy some other way, such as speed (but then it would go faster than light).
