whats your definition of alot. Windows Vista pcs are running from $700 and up. Hp has some good cheap laptops. Make sure it has 1 gig or more of ram, dual core proccesor and the best graphics sard you can get. make sure it has a long battery life and surge protector and that its waterproof. You probably want a Vista Ultimate laptop for students. It has great multimedia capability like music and movies and comes with windos media center. Vista also is really secure.

That one answerer has a good point. Consumer Reports tests out all these products to tell you how good they really are. They charge $5 for a 1-month subscription to their online service. In this case, where you're going to be spending a couple-hundred anyway... you might as well put down $5 to see what the best ones are.
They even list their buying advice for free.

I have a Dell Latitude d620 and I LOVE IT! It's got lots of storage and it's pretty light. I watch dvds on mine all the time and I also have itunes on it. You can get them anywhere from fair priced to spendier, depending on the memory and GB. Mine was about $1500 but it was the most expensive. I am also a college student and it works great! :)

Order a Dell online. You can build it yourself so you can get what you want. I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with 15" screen, dual core prcessor..it has served me well. plus if you want to order online and you keep checking the site you can get really good deals...for instance i got a printer, carrying bag, and wireless keyboard and mouse for hardly anything!

well since you seem to travel a lot, i personally recommend a light notebook like a thinkpad with tablet functions so you can easily scribble down notes and it is thin and light as well so you will not be bogged down by the weight and conserve energy to go shopping with your friends. nowadays you need not have a cd-burner whever you go, you can always e-mail work to your friends by using the school free wi-fi access to mail large documents to your friends.
