If you can't sleep, just go rub one out. That will help you sleep.

Alchohol can very much mess up your sleep. The problem is that it blocks the production of progesterone (the chemical that says "it's awake time") and when it wears off, that chemical dumps into your body, so you'll crash for 4 hours and then be wired. If it's just happy hour and not too short of a time before bed, and not too much, then that probably isn't the problem, but definately don't disregard it.

Caffeine, as few people know, has a half life of SIX HOURS. What this means is if you have 2 cups of coffee at 6pm, you have a full cup of coffee worth of caffeine in your bloodstream at midnight, literally. Not considering this, people will have that nice cup after work or to get through the last hour of work and be screwed that evening.

As far as the two not mixing, this is true for another reason, and partially on the subject.. Alcohol will cause you to urinate roughly 800-1000 ml of water per 250 ml of alcohol, or 4 times as much. That is hugely dehydrating, and despite the common thought that coffee will sober you up, or cure a hangover (because of it's tendency to help headaches), it will actually dehydrate you further.

Something interesting to note on this subject is that being dehydrated is widely unknown, yet very common cause of insomnia. So you're doing three things, despite only looking like two, to cause yourself not to sleep, often far too close to bedtime. If you did sleep a full night after all of that, I would be shocked.

Please see my sources for more information, and also keep in mind that other common causes of sleep deprivation are stress and pain (headaches from dehydration for example, or perhaps even an uncomfortable bed.) The last thing to note is that simply fixing all of this may not be enough, but if you want any sleep aid to work, you're going to have to cut all of this out first to see if it is the cause of your insomnia.

Alcohod is something of a depressant, where it causes you to be sleepy when you are done clubbing for the night. When it has been metabolized by your liver, you will experience a "surge" about 4 hours after you have been drinking when your metabolism rebounds and you are wide awake. Try a little Benadryl (dipehenhydramine)as a sleep aid, or cut down on your alcohol consumption.

both alcohol and caffeine could be making you toss and turn. If you have to have caffeine (like in coffee) try to have it in the AM and avoid alcohol for a couple of days. Also Chocolate has caffeine in it so avoid it too. If this doesn't help maybe see a doctor and they can prescribe a sleeping aid. good luck

They both can give you problems with your sleeping. Drink a lot less coffee and stay away from the booze, or at least don't drink very much.
