oh contraire, my friend! PE teachers ( in my district at least) make 10-12k more than the average English teacher. This is because they get paid significantly extra for coaching sports whilst the English teachers are home correcting MOUNDS of papers on their own dime. Don't get me wrong... the PE teachers I know are rather hard workers and don't have "easy" jobs. Nevertheless.... I don't think ANYONE has it quite as difficult as the English teachers.

I don't believe PE teachers should get paid less - and I do believe we need them. In my state, newer PE teachers are required to major in elementary education (not certain about high school level) and minor in PE, health, coaching etc... Based on my education classes and witnessing my peers, newer PE teachers are taught to incorporate other subjects into PE. In my school, I have seen the PE teacher use math in his lessons. And... he doesn't teach dodgeball :) I do agree that it is the parents' responsibility to help their kids choose a healthy lifestyle. However, the reality is that we have some pretty irresponsible parents out there. And the majority that are 'responsible' may be working different shifts simply to make ends meet and therefore aren't available to be the best parents they could potentially be. Lastly, as an elementary teacher required to meet district and state mandates, and follow strict curriculum guidelines - I am thankful for the blocked out PE time with a separate PE teacher. It's not that I am not willing or capable of teaching PE - but it is likely that I would 'cheat' and use that time to address literacy and math deficiencies in order to insure my students success on standardized testing. As far as the idea that 'anyone can do it,' I do not agree. Controlling a group of kids in a highly engaging experience takes a lot of prior planning and classroom management skills. In high school PE is a lot different. And, it is an elective class for the most part. Schools in my area require two semesters of PE to graduate high school - which essentially could be completed in the students' freshman year. Other than having a daughter in high school, I am not familiar with their program - and certainly not able to form an educated opinion about it. Interesting question.

All teachers in the same public school get paid according to the same pay scale. You make more with each year of experience and for having a masters or PhD, but subject taught is not a factor.
However, yes, coaches often do earn stipends for coaching. It's a big time commitment involving lots of nights and weekends.
Now if only teachers in other subjects got stipends for all the extra work they do outside school hours--grading, planning, tutoring students, marching band practice, sponsoring the school play or student council or the million other things we do. :-)

PE Teachers ( in QLd anyway) have to have a second subject anyway.. they also have to do the same amount of reporting and stats on the class so I ont beleive that they have less to do.. PE is a very responsible subject, they have to be aware of all possible injuries that may occur and keep up to date with modern teaching practises all the time..

Being a PE teacher, all teachers get paid based the number of years they teach and what education they have. It does not discriminate based on what you teach. Of course thats in the state of oregon and washington.

If that PE teacher is also the football coach, in some schools they may get paid more than the principal!

A lot of schools just pay by days they're there, some even pay by student attendance. I wouldn't say they'd get paid less because of their subject they're teaching.
