I agree that if you seriously want to build a real website you should forget the free options.

In effect you can build a free site simply with Yahoo, freewebs, and loads of others but they are never 'truly' yours -- just a subdomain of the provider -- so only any good for a vanity site or a family 'just for a bit of fun' site. Certainly of very little use for truly getting your own traffic and any potential income/commercial use.

if you have any real plans then building a site with your own domain name with a reliable host is the way to go. Some additional review information can be seen about good options for economical real website building at: http://www.happytorecommend.com
or maybe take a look at: http://recommended-hosting.build-better-websites.com with which you could compare the full deal details with other starter packages

If you just want to build a 'website' for fun then I'd recommend starting a 'blog instead -- you can do pretty much all you want in the respect of uploading pictures/photos/ text/ ads -- they are easy to set up, easy to build and in due course you can even feature adsense and may even earn a few dollars. There are many options to choose from but generally Wordpress and Blogger seem to be the easiest to set up and use, and of course completely free:

http://wordpress.org/

If the bug gets you and you want to go the next step and build a real site -- then forget free options and choose a good host with a good 'web site building tool' provided (unless you know html/ftp/ etc already) or you have good website building software from which you can load your own templates up to your host.

If you are serious about creating websites for your business, don't go for free webhosting as they are not reliable and you may end up losing all your work. They usually put ads on your websites and it could be annoying.

If you intend to create a few websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website), go for multiple web hosting where you could handle your websites in one account.

Visit Following webhosting , they are quite good.

Hostmonster http://anurl.com/?PQMRY

They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 200000 MB (200 GB ). They only charge $4.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.
Visit the site to check details.

Following site is quite good to register domains as price is reasonable with free privacy. Some charge about $5/ year just for free privacy.
