Now for an answer from someone that knows.

1. Following the passage of the Tea Act in which England required the colonists to ONLY buy their tea from the British-owned East India Tea Company, the colonists rebelled and threw the tea overboard in several different ports (Boston being only one, but by far the most famous.)

2. The British responded by passing the Coercive Acts (known as the Intollerable Acts in America) in which a series of measures were enacted in order to punish the colonists for their rebellious behavior.

3. Following the passage of these oppressive acts the colonists began to demand a resolution to their problems with England. The First Continental Congress was formed to that end. It was decided there that the colonists would form a group known as "The Association" which would be in charge of organizing boycotts of British goods throughoug the colonies. This was adopted as their plan of attack short of going to war (which only 1/3 of the colonists supported at that time.) The First Continental Congress also agreed that if the difficulities with England were not resolved by this boycott they would meet again the following spring, which they did immediately after the British shooting several colonists at Lexington, Massachusetts on April 18, 1775.

And there you have it. Ta-Da!

Americans were aggrieved against Great Britain. The Continental Congress gave birth to the Declaration of Independence. The rest you know.
