A conservative government has a classic economics underpinning. Therefore they believe that the free market is far more effective and efficient that any other market system. According to this idea, unions distort the labour market. The fear is that the increased bargaining power of a union (via the threat of withdrawal of labour ie strike) drives up wages and reduces efficiency (because unions may be able to bargain a 35 hour week for example, or overtime, benefits etc).
By limiting the power of a union, governments then give back power to the market, allowing companies to set wages and conditions at the competitve price. This should then equate to maximum employment outcomes.
Or at least that's one idea. I don't necessarily agree, but that's another question entirely.

Because unions = communism. In a fair and open society anyone could work for anyone for whatever the market wage decided. If you are being paid too little then find a new job. If you are thick you will be paid less, if you are intelligent you will be paid more. QED. The only case against this is for "celebrities" such as David (stupid) Beckham and Paris (stupid and got a big nose, and a slapper) Hilton

Unions have a tendancy to cause more problems than they can fix. Raising prices is just one example. To put it plainly, if the UAW gets it's workers a raise, then the vehicle manufacturers have to charge more for their product to cover the cost, if a local baker needs a new delivery truck he will have to raise the price of his bread to cover the extra cost. Since getting rid of child labor, and getting the fourty hour work week established, and the basics that we count on today. Unions have done little else, but drive up inflation.

Unions in this country have federal protection. Workers are allowed to unionize with the consent of the government. They are, however, rules concerning how, when, and whether or not, their strike is legal.
