Are you refering to the Château de Versailles? Then in this case, Versailles was founded in 1837 by King Louis-Philippe, the museum was dedicated to 'all of France's glories'. Therefore only victories are depicted, not defeats.
Situated several km S-W of Paris, Versailles, at the time of Louis XIII was no more than a modest hunting lodge. The creation of the great castle was due to Louis XIV who abandoned the Louvre to build a royal palace. The architects Hardouin-Mansart and Le Notre managed the works for a long time. In 1789, the royal family finally returned to Paris. In 1837, Louis-Philippe decided to convert it as the museum of French History. Nowadays, the castle has been restored to be as beautiful as in the past.

the city of versailles was first documented in 1038 A.D so that rules out Louis. Henry I was in power at this time, but theres no documentation to support that he built versailles.

If you mean the Palace of Versailles, Louis XIV had it built.

I know it was a hunting lodge for the french king and later converted to a place, but i don't remember which kind originally built the lodge.
