and why do some countries have this ritual to place one's hand on the heart, while others don't?

Ireland..some countries place one's hand on the heart as a symbol of their allegiance to their country.

In my opinion, Israel has the best natyional anthem, for the main reason that it is the only national anthem that speaks of peace, and not war and corruption. Also, the hand over the heart suggests one's heart is in complete pledge with one's country. Some countries do not have this because they do not believe one should be completely in support of the country, so all do not have to be completely patriotic.

My adopted country has the best ("O Canada"). My native country's anthem, I've never liked it and even less now that its blood thirsty President is shown all over the place with his hand on his heart.

i think south korea's national anthem is pretty cool. you dont have to hear the words to know that everything is going to be alright. It is peaceful and has this innocent sound to it.
