you can eat big fish like shark or king mackrel and tuna only once a week as long as it's canned and "light". lobster and crab are okay but remember moderation is key with everything.

stay away from uncooked fish ...like whats found in sushi...it CAN contain Listeria bacteria...its a small risk, but it can do powerful damage if you just happen to be the ONE unlucky person who contracted it! Cooked fish and shell fish is OK...but in limited quantities..i think they recommend no more than once a week...esp. with fish....thanks to unchecked water pollution...there are high rates of mercury found in many fish and this is something which stays in your system and can build up....im not honestly sure if lobster and crab have been found to have high levels of mercury...so they may be among the safer choices. but where do you live that you eat fish more than once a week???LOL

What I remember from when I was pregnant was that you had to be careful HOW MUCH large sea fish you ate like tuna an sword fish because of the mercury content.

I asked my dietitian and she said that tuna steaks were the ones to be worried about as they are made from larger fish which have accumulated higher amounts of mercury. The tuna that they use for the canned fish is smaller younger tuna with low mercury levels.

You, along with nursing mothers and young children, should not eat the following fish, as they can contain high levels of methylmercury:

Swordfish
Tilefish
King mackerel
Shark

It's okay to eat other cooked fish/seafood as long as you select a variety of other kinds while you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant. You can eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury. Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish. Another commonly eaten fish, albacore ("white") tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.

Nearly all fish contain traces of methylmercury. However, larger fish that have lived longer have the highest levels of methylmercury because they've had more time to accumulate it. These large fish pose the greatest risk to pregnant women who eat them regularly.

Shell fish are perfectly fine; limit to 12 oz per week. Here's a list of fish to avoid: Shark, King Mackeral, Tilefish, Swordfish, Tuna (not canned), and Sushi.

You may have a moderate amount of shellfish. I am five months pregnant and I too craved crabs. I ate them. My OB told me that I should not eat more than once a week.
