It is a form of memeory that lasts a few seconds after the experience of the stimulus. If the brains considers the memory to be meaningful, it will subsequently transfer some/all of the contents of the short term memory to long term memory.

Unfortunately I knew someone that had short term memory loss.
She was very old and was in a nursing home. She would ask the same few questions maybe three or four times during a regular visit. She remembered things that happened long ago so knew who to ask about. You deal with this by answering each question as if it was the first time she asked. Very sad.

animals are said to have short term memory but i disagree .many can remember things for years
