As indicated before the main actors were Doug McClure (Trampas) and James Drury (the eponymous hero) - the show was originally a spin-off from a film of the same name but in America the show was also known as Tenderfoot.

James Drury, Doug McClure, Lee J. Cobb and I think our English actor Stewart Granger took over from Lee J. Cobb.

The original actor was Gary Cooper in a black and white 1929 film. His famous line from the movie, "Smile when you say that," was the "Go ahead, punk, make my day" type of trademark line of its time.
The television series began 33 years later in 1962 and starred James Drury. The theme music by Percy Faith was so powerful that it overshadowed the thin plots of the show, however.

Doug (Alcoholic)McClure?
James (Mr Handsome) Drury?
And not forgetting that great actor Lee J. Cobb (who?) the boss. He who starred in the 'In Like Flint' 'Our Man Flint' 'Exorcist' 'Lawman'...etc.
'The Virginian' started as a short term American western TV series cashing in on popular programmes like 'Wagon Train' 'Cheyenne' ' Rawhide' and 'Bonanza' .
'The Virginian' as we know ran for years.
Ahhhh...great days.

I know of only three versions: one in 1914 starring Dustin Farnum, one in 1929 starring Gary Cooper, and one in 1946 starring Alan Ladd.
I guess there must have been another one that escaped me.
