i manage a pet grooming salon and i've found doing free or reduced cost grooms for local rescue groups to be very helpful. when the pets we've groomed are adopted a large percentage continue using us for grooming. the cost to us is realitively small and it's always good to do a good deed. the best part is these people that run the shelters are hooked into your base clientele and word of mouth is the best advertisement.

Offer a discount

Offer one free grooming for every three appointments made/met

Offer to donate a portion of the grooming fee to your local animal shelter and get the local TV and radio stations to do short promotional pieces on the air

Offer new customers one "free bath" for their pet

Whenever there is a community event (like a fair or other get together) make sure you have a booth set up there so everyone gets to know your business. Offer some one-time, free grooming services as raffle prizes at these events.

Put fliers or business cards up at laundry mats, check with the local veternarians in town and see if they will let you put up something on a bulletin board, give your current customers(I'll call them A) little coupons to give to friends(B and C)(with some type of a code number on it) and for the first two peple that A brings in, give A a free grooming for their dog!

advertise in your local paper with discounts on grooming. Place an ad big enough that it will catch peoples attention. I did this and they came pouring in. Soon had too much business, but made it thru.

just an idea, but go to ur local pet store and see if ur can work out a deal with them, for example, the owners of the pet store may have a pet in need of a bath, offer them a free session in trade for them handing out ur business cards to their clients... its all about give and take
