I can't remember the name. I think it had "Mountain" in it. All I remember about the book was that this girl was visiting her father (I believe). And he had a new girlfriend (I think). And she was in an avalanche and the only way she could climb her way out was to spit and see which way was up or down. That's all I can remember. Sorry for lack of info.

There was another couple of books I read while I was in 6th grade that maybe you could help me with.

1. All I remember was this kid was young and created toothpaste or something. That's really all I remember.

2. I remember something about a kid creating a new word and something about a president? If you have no idea, please disregard. That's all I remember. It might even be two different books.

I'm working on the first one. Could it be "Avalanche" by Arthur Roth? Someone else looking for a specific avalanche book said that it was about a boy named Chris who was upset about something, so he went out skiing in a place he knew was dangerous. Then he became trapped in an air pocket in the snow in an avalanche, and his brother was out looking for him, and he was missing for a couple of days before they found him. The book apparently describes what it was like being trapped, and how the boy (not girl, I know) knew how to do certain things, like urinating to melt snow away from him, melting snow in his hands to drink, etc. It was a Scholastic book, originally published in 1979 but it went through several printings after that. Here's a desription I found by one bookseller...maybe it will ring some bells: "AVALANCHE! The distant coyote, sharp against the snow, was a hunter's challenge. Chris had to fire! His shot echoed . . .became a menacing rumble, as the deep mountain snow began to slide downward - slowly, then faster, faster . . . Frantically, Chris tried to out-ski the thundering white torrent. It flowed over him, suffocating, blinding . . ." There are some more reviews and a picture at amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0590422677/24680e-20

The second book is probably "The Toothpaste Millionaire" by Jean Merrill, recently back in print: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0618759255/24680e-20

I think the last book is probably "Frindle" by Andrew Clements, too, though the part about the president could be something else. It's been awhile since I read that one. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0689818769/24680e-20

Could you have read "The Kid Who Became President" by Dan Gutman around the same time? It was published in 1999, but since I don't know *when* you were in 6th grade, it's a possibility. :) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0590023764/24680e-20

The Watsons Go to Birmingham is an awesome book to introduce during black history month. The Table Where Rich People Sit is another great book to teach children about the most important things in life. And because I love native american history, The Birchbark House. Hope this helps a little! Books are life!

It's been along time since I read it, but the first might be My Side of the Mountain. The last book is Frindle by Andrew Clements.
