make sure your books are covered. and stuff them nicely in your bag so it won't crumple. do not fold it when reading. also don't use thick objects like pencils ballpens etc. as bookmarks.

The library I worked in bought clear package tape by the ton and covered all of the pbk books with it. First we put a piece folded over the top and bottom of the front and back covers, then a longer piece over the outside edge of both covers, trimmed at both ends, then a piece wrapped around the spine. Last, and probably most important, a open the cover, crease it open, and put a piece of tape down half on the cover and half on the first page. It kept the books pretty square, the bindings didn't get creased (so the pages didn't fall out), and the corners didn't curl.
Bookstores sell a paperback book cover, usually cloth or canvas, that slips over the book while you are reading it. This protects it while you carry it around in your purse, backpack, bookbag, etc.
Always store your books standing up straight, It is hard on the spine binding if they are listing to one side. You can also stack them, but it is hard to get ones on the bottom, and the urge to pull it out and inevitably topple the stack is enormous.
If all else fails, don't read your own books. Buy a copy, put it on the shelf and don't touch it. Check out a copy from the library and use theirs.

Get a book shelf. Too much? Get what I have. Its a nice box, not brown, but like a sturdy black file box. I put all my books there. And they're great. If you want to keep your paperbacks really nice, that you can sell it later on, when your broke, etc. get a plastic book case. Me, I have loads of books, paperback and hardbacks. I'd always wash my hands when I read them, so the insides won't get dirty. Don't eat when you read, just in case. For the box case, make sure that you don't stack other books over the other books. File them.

From the time you buy the book (any book hardcover or not).. you cover it with clear plastic cover. Or better yet, place it inside a clear or brown envelope so that none of its pages or any part of the paperback will get distroyed. It won't be distroyed if you do this because it won't be in contact with other things, especially sharp objects that can tear the pages, nor the effect of carrying the paperback inside the bag.

My old school library used to cover all their books with clear contact. I don't like the idea about doing this to my books but it does work to an extent. You could only buy books in hardcover from now on but that gets a bit expensive. I wouldn't be taking my good books to school. Instead of taking your own books why not only take library borrowed books to school and save your own books to read at home? I can't really think of a foolproof suggestion sorry but I hope this helps

Try to keep from laying it open so far that the spine cracks.

Nothing, really. Try not to break the spine, that's what really makes them look bad.
