yes they do but it's usually humane society/animal rescue that does that. and they've captured racoons in garages and snakes and whatever wild little critters pose problems.

Yes and No.. It depends on managment, policy and public perception.
There is an old addage that alot of fire departments follow, You never see a cat skeleton in a tree.. they will get down..
I myself have gone as a volunteer firefighter to help people get their cats out of trees, but we tell them, that we will come, assess the situation and will do it only if there is no real risk to us.
We do not have the aerial ladder trucks that go up 120 feet, we have a 35 foot ladder, and unless it was a very strong tree and the cat was not that far up, we would not even use that. Sometimes a simple climb and pull on the branch with a pike pole to dislodge the cat and let it drop in a blanket the owners have will work best.
But do they really rescue cats from trees, some of them do, yes,
But do they really rescue cats from trees, alot of them don't no.

They do it in some towns when there is nothing more important to do. They are the ones with tall ladders. When they do things like that they want the goodwill of people who donate money to fire departments.
If a fire or a tall ladder or other special firefighter skills and equipment are not involved, animal rescue will usually fall to people specially trained in animal control or to cops on the scene, who will often call animal control services themselves if they cannot handle it or are busy.

Yes - this is a true story. A friend of mine is a fireman in London and went to rescue the preverbial cat stuck up a very large tree(well it was a building but no matter) , they managed to coax it down, and the cat was so frightened that it scarpered as soon as it saw all the commotion and ran into the road and was run over.

No, they will not. My daughter cat was stuck in the tree and they said they would not help because it is not an emergency that involves someones life. So, one of the kids went up the tree got the cat and then he could not get down from the tree. The fireman finally help since a human was involved and both the kid and cat where rescued from the tree.

As a firefighter my self the answer is YES we don't only safe cat but any other animal and people. We have been called to a truck that over turned on the freeway and sheep and chooks were running all over the freeway. just the other week we got call to get a child that was stuck on the roof of a house. A fire fighter job is not just about putting fire our.

Yes, I have a friend who's lizard got stuck inside their cavity wall on their bungalow and they called the fire brigade and they turned up with 3 fire engines and spent all afternoon rescuing the lizard.
It was in the papers and lizard was fine in the end. If they went to all that effort for a lizard then i am sure a cat in a tree is nothing.

They are not allowed to any more due to a couple of fireman having lost their lives falling from the trees,- when the cat will eventually come down in its own time on its own anyway. Same as if a cat is on a roof of a house (like mine was) they were not allowed to help because of the potential risks. People one thing- a cat is another!? xxx

Well, they do save lives, so if there is a fire they will save it. They have the truck with the ladder to reach it. I am not sure about making a house call just for the cat, but maybe they would; its never happened to me. But, they probably save whatever kind of lives that they can. Animal control probably helps more with saving animals and capturing them on the loose though.
