I'm a life-long Cowboy fan, that annually flies from MD to Texas to see some home games, but how does Michael Irvin get in at all, let alone before Tagliabue and Monk? Character really should play a role in the voting.

A better case could be made for Gary Clark than Art Monk. Monk had more catches over 16 seasons, but Clark was big in the big games (like Irvin). Irvin was selected to 5 Pro Bowls in 12 seasons (41%), Clark to 4 in 11 (36%) and Monk to 3 in 16 (19%). Clark's other numbers (yds per catch, catches per TD, TDs per season, etc.) also match up better with Irvin than Monk's. I expect DBs were more concerned with Irvin and Clark than with Monk. Finally, It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Longevity.

The fact is that Monk was consistently average. He played 16 seasons, yet he was not even the top receiver on his own team in 12 of them. He only put up 1000 yards 5 times in 16 seasons. Monk was never the focal point of the Redskins offense. He was a consistent performer, but he was just average. On the Redskins alone, he was behind Charlie Brown, then Gary Clark, then Ricky Sanders.

Irvin was the top receiver on Dallas for 8 straight seasons. He was a key integral part of the three Super Bowl Champions, where as Monk was just on three Super Bowl Champions. Irvin went over 1000 yards 7 times in 8 seasons.

as for Tagliabue - Rozelle didnt get in until his third vote.

I personally agree about the character issue, but the voters are instructed to only take into account their performance on the field.

My dear Redskin Fan. Although Monk is surely a great Hall of Fame choice, I believe it is Irvin's turn. Monk is totally off the map and does nothing to promote himself as Irvin has done. I believe only the Redskin fans think of Monk these days. I can understand your hatred for Irvin. Just as for me, a Cowboy fan, every team in the NFC East, excluding the Cowboys, makes me sick to my stomach and I truly hate the Skins, Eagles, and Giants with a passion. So, if Monk were chosen today over Irvin, I would be saying the same thing you have. I truly believe that if Monk desires to be in the Hall, he or someone in his corner should let it be known to help the cause of fans like yourself. Redskins, in my opinion, just don't make enough noise to represent the franchise. That mistake is on the owner's shoulders, who simply doesn't have a clue. But, he does have some cash. Maybe one day he will figure out a way to use it for the benefit of the Skins and their fans.

The Hall of Fame does not factor in a players character. Although Art Monk is deserving, you cannot say that Michael Irvin is not. His career stats can match up with any receiver: 750 career receptions, 11,904 receiving yards, 65 touchdowns, voted to 5 straight pro bowls. And possibly the one stat that placed him above Art Monk, was his three championship rings.

I think Irvin got in this year because of all the complaining that Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith did last year when Irvin didn't make it into the HOF. What a joke!!

Fact is Monk should have been in the HOF years ago!!!!!

It's all political. You never hear anything from Art Monk these days, but big-mouth Michael Irvin is everywhere telling you how good he was. It's a disgrace!

By the way, congrats to Roger Wehrli for getting into the HOF! I live near his hometown of King City, MO.

I couldn't agree more with you. I saw that come across the bottom line today and was like WTF is going on? Honestly, he gets in with Thurman Thomas? Either Thurman should have been in years ago, or Irvin shouldn't have got in so early.
