The main purpose of a water seal in a water closet is to prevent escape of sewer gases into the building I understand.
Does the water seal in the water closet serve any other useful functions?

the water that stands in the bowl prevents sewer gas and vermin from entering the home. as well as...................keeps your toilet bowl from having streaks. seriously. If that "stuff" didn't drop into the water you'd have to scrub the toilet after every time you used it.

That's why sometimes you'll see toilet manufacturers label their toilets with, "new larger water surface"

Keeps rodents and flies, bacteria, viuses, to name a few, out of your house too. Kind of a door to the outside sewer world. Imagine the living organisms in the public sewer you are connected to and only that little water trap as the final door to your home.

If you are referring to the wax ring, then yes, it does serve another purpose, that of keeping water (and other stuff) flushed down toilet in the pipes and not running out on floor. The bottom surface of the toilet is just flat porcelain, and the wax ring compresses between that flat surface and the flange to form this seal.

Uh, yes, um, well, lets say it is easier to clean the bowl after using because of the water. Less sticking on the side walls
