Bloody Mary springs from a story about a witch who was in a horrible accident that mutilated her face. Throw in the superstition that mirrors provide a passage way between the spiritual world and ours, and it's a perfect mix for preteens to freak themselves out with.
There is no real relation to Mary Tudor, the daughter of King Henry VIII. Mary Tudor WAS called Bloody Mary but that was because she was on a mission to return her subjects to Catholicism (sp?). Her appellation rose as a result of the executions of Protestants, of which, only about 300 actually occurred.
