I heard somewhere that peter sarstedt was actually singing about sophia loren because she was a poor girl from naples. wikipedia also says that it could have had something to do with the magazine marie-claire (not so romantic)
what do you guys think?

I read it was Sophie Loren, but as it was one of those gossipy mags I don't know if it was correct.

Just a song; the connection to Sophia Loren is an urban legend.
I don't believe Marie Claire was published in the UK when the song was written, although it had been published in France since the 30s

It was about a woman who lived in the slums who made it big went back to where she came from and gave all her money to them she became a nurse or something like that

I SENT HIM AN EMAIL THIS MORNING ABOUT THE SONG.
HIS REPLY WAS,THAT THE SONG WAS NOT ABOUT A SPECIFIC PERSON.
SO IT`S NOT ABOUT ANYONE FAMOUS .SORRY.
