When did your "milk" (colostrum) come in? I am 33 weeks pregnant with my 4th daughter and was just taking a bath when I guess the warm water must have caused the "let down" reflex and I leaked a bit (not much). I never actually had anything (milk wise) before my previous 3 daughters births, so this is new territory for me, just a bit curious how early some of you all got your milk. Also I'm wondering if this mean I could possiblely start pumping? Or will it just be colostrum until I have the baby (I generally have a hard time getting my milk supply established, it would be nice to get a head start lol)? Thanks in advance for your answers! (This is NOT a will I go into labor soon question, also please do not answer "ask your doctor" I have an appointment later in the week and intend to do just that, I am looking for answers from experienced mothers (or fathers who know what went on with their wives)).

Colostrum can start to leak out towards the end of pregnancy and its very normal. My last pregancy I started around the same time you did. There is no reason to pump now, because it will remain colostrum until your milk comes in after the baby is born. (and pumping could cause preterm labor if there are other issues involved.) Generally its colostrum for at least a few days after birth.

I'm 27 weeks pregnant. I started leaking colostrum probably about 5-7 weeks ago. It's really not a lot. I've actually only seen a drip maybe 3-4 times. I took a class on breastfeeding and they it's perfectly normal. Your body is just getting ready! I wouldn't start pumping. The baby will need the colstrum and if you start pumping you might pump out all the colostrum and start pumping out your milk!

Can't remember which book I read it in (most likely "What to Expect" or "Your Pregnancy Week by Week"), but it said that pumping or otherwise expressing the colostrum early could deprive the baby of the nutrients it needs in those first few feedings. That being said, I'm 34 weeks and every couple of nights I leak about a tablespoon or so when I'm in bed, so I don't know how that's not wasting the same nutrition!
From everything I've read it's the actual detachment of the placenta that causes milk production to begin, so I wouldn't expect any milk yet.

my colostrum came in about the 4th month. so this is normal. don't worry!! i would lay wrong when i got towards the end of my pregnancy, and would cause some leaking. so not to worry, but don't start pumping!!!! the first feeding is supposed to be the colostrum, it has a lot of protein and other vital nutrients that your baby will need. plus that will just make it worse. the actual milk will start coming in a few days after birth.
hope this helps and congrats and good luck with your 4th daughter :)

some women get colostrum and let down as early as 28 weeks pregnant. I am 29 weeks pregnant and I too will get some leakage while in the bath tub. Completely normal. I was also going to ask my OB at my next visit, this friday, if it was too early to pump. I want to get a good supply stored up so hubby and my 4 year old son can help with the feedings so I can sleep.

it is just colostrum right now, if i remember correctly your milk will come in after the baby. i would wait till after the baby is here to start pumping because you can't keep it for long periods of time like you can formula or regular milk.

If you start to pump now, you might start labor for yourself. I wouldn't do that. I'm thinking its colostrum and I'd try to not disurb your breasts too much. With my first, my mild came in after about 3 days and with my second...she was 6 weeks premature and it came in about 4 days after she was born.

My mom said the same thing happened with me and it was just because her body had already had 3 kids. she asked the docter and he said it was preparing itself. it came into good use because i seemed to always be hungry, LOL. Its no biggie.
P.S. hope you have a health baby!!!
