"Which" car is better?
Comparing the two is Apples and Oranges: 3 Series small, 5 series large. You really need to decide what you're after: a sedan or a coupe? A big engine or a bigger engine? Is cost a factor? If so, you may want the 3 series. Do you have a family? If so, you may want the M5. Apples and Oranges.
Hope this helps, good luck.

There's a reason the M5 costs more than a M3. The M5 will do 185 MPH. I don't think the M3 could come close to that. A M5 can handle very, very well - if a M3 can out suspension a M5, it can't be by much. I don't believe a M3 can out perform a M5 at any level.

It depends what you mean by "better". Both cars have different characteristics that make them what they are.
Both cars are fast, they both will turn heads.
BUT:
M3 is superior because:
-cheaper
-more nimble due to light weight and small size
- choose this if all you want is performance
M5 is superior because:
-space for passenger
-more comfortable and spacious
-more features and high-tech "toys" up front
-engine is quieter than the in-line 6 on the M3
- choose this if you want performance plus all the above.

the csl is lighter and a better handler. focused on performance. the m5 is still a major performer but its bigger, heavier, and dosent handle as good as the csl. it depends on what type of driving youd rather do.
