It's because widescreen fits a theater's screen.

Most DVD's either come with the option of widescreen or full screen, OR you can buy a DVD that says Full Screen right on the front. I used to hate widescreen (in the old days called letter box). Widescreen has it's advantages, instead of cutting off the left and right sides of the frame you can see everything at once, like you did in the theaters. Full Screen means that somethings on the sides are cut off or they have to "pan and scan" that's when you see the movie pan (left or right) to show someone giving their dialouge. Now that I've changed to Widescreen I can't stand pan and scan anymore it's too distracting.

Go here to see an example of what you're missing with pan and scan (full screen)

Movies are made for the wide screens you see in a movie theater. When you watch them on a regular square TV you're actually not seeing the entire picture because it's cut off on the left and right side somewhat. So DVDs have the option to watch then in wide screen so you can see it the way it was meant to be seen. The problem is that if you watch a movie in wide screen mode on a regular TV then you get the black bars at the top and bottom which can be annoying because even though you're seeing the entire picture it's smaller. Most DVDs have the option to turn wide screen off or if the DVD does not have the option the DVD player may have an option for it. This is why some people buy wide screen TVs. With a wide screen TV you don't see the black bars at the top and bottom and you see the entire picture.

Well, first of all, all movies aren't widescreen. But I have to say, I am seeing alot of those. And I'm just making a guess here, but I think it's widescreen because when you put on subtitles, it looks good. You can see them better. I'm not totally sure about that though.

I think you mean letter box.. they are that way, because that is how they are filmed..when you change them to what you call normal, you lose alot of the frame.. the image is made bigger to fill your tv screen, but it can only do this by closing in on the action, or in effect bringing it close up..therefore a lot has to be cut away.. You are better off watching it in letter box..

Wide screen is the way they were filmed and view in theaters. Full screen just chops a little off each side.

I hate 'em. Especially with close-ups; all one sees is the guy's forehead down to his throat. I want more of the scenery, but not so much that the foreground is drown out.

I miss full-screen too, I'd rather see ALL of Tyrese then some of him!
