well there really is only one widely accepted theory, the big bang theory. it says taht at some point, the entire universe was in one infinitely small point which exploded and expanded to become the universe.

understand that these theories aren't just guesses... they're based on mathematical equations. this theory comes because the universe is expanding through time, and so if u reverse time, the universe will become smaller and start off at a point. mathematical calculations, which i think is based upon blackbody radiation, date the universe to around 10-20 billion year\s old

the other main theory, the steady state theory, says that the universe has no origin, but is expanding because new matter is being created. This theory was killed after the 1965 discovery of background cosmic radiation left behind from teh big bang

there are of course, numerous creation theories, but they can effectively be ruled out

1. The Big Bang theory, now widely accepted. Universe was created by a cataclysmic event, originating from a single point of matter, several billion years ago
2. Steady State theory, contends that the Universe has always been there and always will. This does not account for the fact that the Unviverse is expanding.
3. Various Creation theories, religous viewpoints. Contend that the Unvierse was created by one or more Divine Entities. Non-scientific.

I've heard of steady state and big bang. Here's another widely debated theory: Quasi-Steady Pulse. It basically says that the universe has always existed, and that it constantly grows and shrinks after reaching a maximum volume.

My theory is that it's all from a guy named Kevin. Details are sketchy.

All hail Kevin.
