If you're just a beginner I would suggest renting as opposed to buying right away...oboes are VERY difficult to play and can be frustrating even for accomplished players. Selmer and Yamaha both make very good student (plastic) oboes. Fox, in addition to the brands you mentioned, makes an excellent pro (wood) oboe as well. Good luck with your pursuit of the oboe!

I've played the oboe for several years and I started out on an intermediate Yamaha (about $2000) for 6 years. Then I bought a Lorée, which is about double that price for a used oboe, or a brand new one which is about triple that price. Oboes were originally made in France and then brought over to North America. Lorée oboes are made in Paris so they are the best qualities and produces the best tone, and the keys are more accurate too. All the private lessons teachers I ever had had recommended it to me. The bad side is that it is indeed very expensive, unless you are willing to buy a used one.

The best advice I can give you is contact a professional oboe player and ask them what they use. The other part of my answer involves what you need this for such as there are good oboes for different needs. If you are a beginner and this is just my opinion, remembering that I am a brass player is to rent one from a store and find which ones you like better.

Sorry if that wasn't the answer you need.
