I have heard that you can safely color your hair during your second and third trimesters. Does anyone know if this is true or false? Thanks!

Hi everyone, new to the forum but have read it quite a bit recently.
As a hairstylist for the past 23 years and also a qualified Aromatherapist for the past 10, I have not only had a conflict of intrest at times but done a lot of pondering and research on haircolouring during pregnancy.
I have decided it very much depends on the products used, and the tecniques used. I'm lucky enough to have my own salon, so have created as chemical free environment as possible- for my and my clients pleasure.
There are a whole lot of colour ranges that I will not use as I don't want to be breathing in the fumes, or absorbing the contents through my skin. I work on loads of pregnant girls/mums and have been comfortable in colouring their hair with what I use (still being able to lighten hair and get white coverage). When they ask me if its safe I explain what I use, and choices of how we apply the colour etc and let them make their own mind up- but I would not do it if I was uncomfortable with my choice of product.
Don't be fooled by large international companies that heavily advertise on TV, mags etc....some of these colour AND cosmetic ranges are absolutely LOADED with chemicals and ingredients you do not want to be breathing in, absorbing through your hands, face or scalp!
As an Aromtherapist, the golden rule is "listen to your nose".
If you cant tolerate the smell of something- don't use it, and don't eat it...whether you are pregnant or not!
Beware of all things syntheticly fragranced in general, including home cleaning products, makeup and cosmetics, and PERFUMES. They can be highly toxic.
During my study over the years it was a real eye opener to all the various things we have around us and put in our shopping trolleys that are nasty, and also contain carcinogens.
So be aware, and informed right across the board in your everyday life- but especially during your pregnancy.
Hope this has been helpfull.

My OB told me not to do it, but I did it anyway in my 2nd trimester and had a touch up before my baby shower. My twin boys went to 37 weeks and seem healthy (5 months in a couple days). Just keep the area (room) well ventilated while applying the dye.

This is something you need to ask your Doctor. I am sure you can do it.. but I would be leary about it. The smell on some of them are really strong and contain chemicals that could harm the fetus. These chemicals soak through your scalp and get into your blood stream. Read the box also.. it should tell you.

My Doc says it is perfectly fine. Have fun. My husband and I just dyed my hair. Just keep it to a minimum of once every 2 months. Good Luck! Meg 21 weeks along....

I had the same fears during my pregnancy. Doctors say it's perfectly normal. It doesn't really matter. But I never took the "risk"

I did in all trimesters and in all 4 pregnancies. All my kids are healthy kids.

Honestly i have ALWAYS wanted to get a straight answer on this question...and never seem to get one! I wish some beauticians had posted....i mean, if its an issue with inhaling chemicals...they do it all day long...do they take 9 months of maternity leave??? What do they do when they get pregnant???

our skin is a living organ including the scalp ; I have heard not to color hair but no one then says what about shampoo, conditioners, hair spray , makeup, perfume, lotions etc

something that doesn't have ammonia is most secure even as pregnant. yet after the fist trimester it really is secure to colour your hair with any hair dye. basically be particular that the room is properly ventilated.
