And if cigarettes MUST be legal, why is it leagal to put so many toxins in them? The US seems to have no problem regulating all kinds of things in this country, so why can there be carbon monoxide, cyanide, etc. in cigarettes?

The gov't could tax the hell out of marijuana AND it is (would be) a billion dollar industry if it were legal, and yet it's not. If cars are required to have safety standards, why can't they force big tobacco to make cigs a little safer? Why is it legal to make such a product with so many know cancer-causing ingredients designed for human consumption?

You ask a very good question.

My guess is that the tobacco industry has such powerful lobbies in Washington, that legislators do not wish to lose financial backing by daring to pass laws outlawing smoking or imposing strict regulations on the tobacco companies.

One of the main reasons in the UK why cigarettes are still legal is that the government receives a hell of a lot of taxes from them, around 10 Billion annually.

Because big tobacco bought into the government decades ago. Just like alcohol is also bad for you, but the companies that make these products spend billions of dollars making sure the right people are elected, and votes go always in their favor.

Prohibition was to try and outlaw alcohol and drinking and that made a lot of money for organized crime and mob bosses.

Our society is slowly making it illegal over the years -- first, no ads on television, second, no smoking in the work place followed by a smoking ban in restaurants, then bars while simultaneously fining stores that sell cigarettes to minors. Now we want to make it illegal to smoke in all public places.

Governments raise HUGE amounts of tax revenue from them. Forget all this rubbish about how much smoking costs the economy, or what strain it puts on the health services. The taxes would pay for that twice over.

GOOD QUESTION!! Unfortunately, the answer is easier than the solution to that problem: money, money, money! They make money off the sale of ciggies and they make money off of people when they get cancer/disease and their HMO's won't cover them. They may as well legalise marijuana and be done with it. At least it's healthy....to a point.

Because the government should't regulate what kind of crap they want to put in their bodies.
Besides, making it illegal would make it more attractive.
