What makes you think he wants to play with toys? He can't see very far yet and he can't grasp and keep a toy.

A 6 week old's best toy is YOU. Your voice, your face, your touch.

He can't see his mobile clearly he can only see and recognise familiar faces and then only when close to him. He doesn't understand what a play mat is. laying him down in the open makes him feel insecure at so young an age. He needs cuddles and talking to and music. He'll start playing when he can hold toys. Start with a rattle or similar and bright soft toys. Enjoy your baby and play with him, because he needs you to hold and shake the toys. Any stimulation is good at this age and it will be a few months before he'll be ready to play alone.

My son didnt start to like his play mat/mobile until he was 8 weeks old and only then for very short periods of time. His favorite thing was just looking, watching. Give him time for actual "toys". When he starts to reach the grabbing stage, I believe a soft rattle is appropriate.

I'm betting he doesn't want to play so much as look at you and study your face. He wants more interaction. I know it's tough when they are this age, they need soooooo much interaction. Just remember these days are fleeting and once they are gone you'll never get them back. I always enjoy just sitting on the couch with a newborn baby (and a bit older) just hoding them and looking at them. If time is your main concern, which are you gooing to regret not doing more of later in his life: holding him or cleaning? Also, if you don't already have one, invest in a swing, it's the new parent's best friend. Vibrating bouncy seats are awesome too.

Carry him around with you, in a sling if necessary. This stimulation will be all he needs at the moment. Interacting with a baby is the best form of play, not toys or being left to lie alone on a playmat.

Anything with noise. He is only 6 weeks lol. He just likes attention and probably hates laying on the mat.

I just had a thought..at 6 weeks a baby wouldn't even know what a toy is lmao! I agree with momma..it's fav toy is you!

My baby boy is 9 weeks old.

Since he was 5 weeks he has loved his playgym - you lie him on his back on his play mat and put the playgym over him and he can reach up and bat the toys around. He loves it and kicks his little legs like mad!!

Here's a photo of him having fun:

Other than that, well he's not that interested in cuddlies etc yet so I just put him on his play mat and sit with him, sing songs, tickle him (he loves his chin and cheeks tickled, his hair stroked and his tummy tickled/blown raspberries on) and just try to stimulate him as much as I can.

He also loves to watch the TV!! I put him in his babychair and he will watch TV (preferably cartoons or kiddies TV programmes for the bright colours and shapes) for a few minutes. No more than that thought because its not great for their eyes. I sit with him and sing along to the songs on the TV etc. He just likes interacting with me really.

He's still a bit young for toys. He may be able to hold a rattle - but I really doubt if he even knows what playing is yet.

Toys R Us sells one thing I like for newborn and up. Go to their website and look up Peek, Rattle and Teether. These are really good if he is grabbing stuff and putting it in his mouth already.

My daughter's favorite toy when she was a newborn was a Inchworm Toy. You can find them on Target's site for $19.99.
There are also some good teether/rattles on Target's site too.

Too get more ideas you can go to Fisher-Price.com and they have a icon for newborn toys. That will show lots more.

a great home - made toy for young babies is cellophane wrapping material sewn securely inside of a flannel pouch.
Its makes a nice crinkly sound and has a texture that babies seem to like. Also its light enough for a small baby, and softer than most rattles, so he/she wont hit themselves with it.
