I've run Vista upgrade advisor and my pc will run vista. My modem came up as unrecognised though. The advice was to download vista capable drivers from the manufacturers website. Having visited Scientific Atlanta website there is no mention of vista. I don't want to upgrade to vista and find i can't get online. The scan also failed to recognise my Creative Webcam, and my mobile Smartphone. Will these work or will i have to chase new drivers for these as well.

wait 6-8months for all the necessary plugins to be available for Vista before you buy it, It was the same for XP, after 6 months all programs worked with it, this is because the software developers had time to re-work the software to work with the new operating system via downloadable patches/updates

There is a good chance that you will be ok. But, you never know. Try it. Vista is more forgiving than XP was when it comes to drivers. There is also a good chance that you Webstar is nothing more than a clone of someone else's modem and has the same chipset. In that case, Vista is likely to detect that modem as a different one. Why would you care as long as it works, right?

If you are with a cable company (like Telewest), perhaps you could get them to bring you a newer modem....I had that Webstar one with a Windows ME PC a couple of years ago, and when the Telewest engineer came to visit about something else, he brought a new Motorola modem. which is fine with my newer XP PC....should imagine a newer modem would be better with Vista?

Yeah, that happens to me also. Only that the message is 'Safely remove your HP printer'. It is nothing to worry about, because the Windows assumes that once you use some hardware, you are going to detach it from the system. So it gives a signal that the hardware can be removed safely. So, after you use your modem, it thinks that you will now remove it, so it tells you so.

What it boils down to is you are gonna end up a guinea pig for microsoft and pay them for it! I never buy a new op sys until its proven! It usually takes a good year for them to get the bugs out!
