how long does it take 4 about 1" - 1.5" convict cichlids to spawn? i just put them in a 55 gallon tank with plenty of hiding places, and breeding spots.

They will need to grow out to about 2.5" before they will be ready to breed. How long that takes depends partly on you. Keep up good water changes, keep the tank clean and feed a wide variety of quality foods will help them to grow more quickly and be more healthy.

Best of luck breeding this really fun fish.

I've had them breed as small as 1 1/4 inches, so any time now for you. Even in a 55 gallon, they'll be territorial and your four will soon become two (the first to pair off will kill the others - or at least keep them so harrassed, they won't be able to feed) unless you use a tank divider. All they need is the mood and a cave (I always used a clay flowerpot turned on its side). Even without the flowerpot, I've had them spawn on the side of the tank.

You can speed things along by feeding them "conditioning" food - bloodworms or enriched brine shrimp to pack them with extra nutrients - spawning & care of the fry takes extra energy on their part!

I was thinking the same thing you are about 10 hours ago. I have two pair also, and I was wondering if they were ever going to breed. I got home this morning and found about 200 eggs. Im sure you know, but you are suppose to have a flower pot so they can lay. All I can tell you is give them time, they might be a little immature for it yet. They will breed when they are ready.
