the dogs owner knows where he/she is going, a blind person uses there other senses, especially hearing, to know where they are and where they are going. No one is given a guide dog until they are competant with using a cane first. A dog is there to assist, not to lead. helping to guide through hazards etc. My 3 yr old daughter is blind, and although she is not walking independantly yet, she knows where she is going or being led when in familiar places.
as she grows up she will become more and more independant, and maybe when in an unfamiliar place she may not know where she is or where to go..but that is the same for sighted people !

Guide dogs don't lead. They go where the blind man takes them, and guide him around obstacles or across roads, etc. It's not like the blind man tells the dog to take him to Tesco's, or the Post Office, for crying out loud!

Guide dogs and blind people get lots of training before they even meet their companion. Then together they have more training. I read an old book once called "Follow My Leader." (The dog's name was Leader.)
It was really interesting. There are probably a lot more books now on the subject.

Their guide dogs are trained extensively & a lot of that training is done with the blind people who are the recipient of that particular guide dog. They say not to fuss over a guide dog when approaching one on the street, as they are trained exclusively to be the "eyes" of their owners & have to stay focused on their owner.

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/ZdQ1J

By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.

To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

Months of training on the routes the blind person may use. After all that, the poor dog has to put up with people on the bus patting him & saying he looks cute!!!
