We use turbo tax and we like it a lot.
But if your taxes are not complicated (lots of itemized deductions) you may be able to use the short form. It is very easy.

One of the easiest ways for a first time filer is to go to H&R Block or similar tax prep. company. You will be able to learn what kind of information they look for and what kind of forms they fill out for you. Next year you can try it on your own.
Turbo Tax is an excellent software for first timers too. It costs less than paying Block too. It has an interview mode for beginners, asking you questions about what kind of wages you earned, what kind of deductions you have, and anything else related to your taxes. You can file electronically and have your refund in as little as two weeks (sometimes sooner). There is free electronic filing on the IRS website, but I haven't used that and don't know if it is good for a beginner.
A word of advice: If you go to H&R Block, don't fall for their instant refund sales pitch unless you absolutely have to have the money that day. Filing electronically, you can elect to have your refund deposited directly to your savings or checking account, and it is usually there in a week or two. You are paying them an extremely high annual interest rate just to have your money a week or two earlier.

If you just have income from a job and it's on a W-2, and you don't have any dependents, download form 1040EZ at irs.gov and follow the instructions and fill it out. It's pretty simple. If you are still a dependent of your parents or of anyone else, be sure to check the box on line 5 that says that.
