I'm afraid your boys won't do much. Dude, they are the Cubbies. They haven't won anything in a century.

The Cubs have a great shot to make the playoffs this year because of the simple reason that the NL Central and the National League is just a flat out weak league. The key for the Cubs will lie in whoever stays healthy. Prior and Wood need to stay healthy and so do Rameriez and Lee. This team has a shot to make a run with new management and new players and it should be an interesting season.

If not this year, it'll be a long time before they contend for a playoff spot. Hendry overpaid for every acquisition this offseason, and it's going to bite him big time when he can't re-sign Zambrano.

As for this year, the division looks weak, but never underestimate the Cardinals. Every year they have what seems like huge holes to fill, and every year they fill them adequately enough to at least contend for a division crown. Can the Cubs do the same this season when Lee and the entire pitching staff (not counting Zambrano) are X-factors? Remember, Lee's got to bounce back from an injury-plagued '06 campaign, and the Cubs don't have a Dave Duncan to teach their middle-of-the-pack arms, not to mention their upper-tier arms not named Zambrano are also injury-prone.

The verdict: either the Cubs trade Zambrano in an effort to build for 2010 before the end of the season, or they stay in contention too long to trade him. Either way, they fall short of the division this season, and the Wild Card goes to either the East or West.

The Cubs have the highest payroll in one of the weakest divisions in baseball. They have Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, and Zambrano, all of whom are elite players. They have a manager that is committed to winning. They should clean up in the NL Central this year... but they won't. With the exception of Zambrano, the rotation is a big question mark. The bullpen is adequate, but Dempster is not very confidence inspiring as a closer. Their pitching will kill them. Their weak defense in the outfield, second, and third will not help them either. Right now, the team looks like a big offense with questionable pitching and poor defense. It's 1988 all over again.

Well Benny, According to my calculations the Cubs have a pretty decent line up this year, and the addition of Alfonso Soriono is going to be a definate plus. They may not make it this year but I can gaurentee the cubs will see the playoffs in the next couple years!

The Cubs suck, and they always will. No matter how much money Hendry spends, it is useless. They might not be in the basement this year, but do not expect them to reach the playoffs.

I think you should content yourself with the fact that the Bears are in the Superbowl. As a long time northsider, I know that you just have to love the Cubbies and hope springs eternal, but I don't get excited.
