You give all the ID you have, open the account, put money in, then when you need to draw a big amount out you need ID all over again. I dont have a passport a driving licence so It is always a big palarva for me, but why should I pay a passport for example, if I never travel abroad. I was born and bred in this country and used to exist!

Totally agree Jeanimus. Just want to add, how do they know when you apply for a passport, who you are?

Tell me about it! When my father died, my mother simply could not prove that she existed. All the household bills were in dad's name and she had no bank accounts, passport or driving licence - never needed them, you see.
The fact that people can actually live happily like this for eighty years was incomprehensible to the fast-living, international men of mystery who to work for for banks, post offices and building societies and they would not accept her birth certificate or marriage lines as proof of her existence. They were all able to produce a long list of "acceptable" documents, none of which she possesed and there was one **** who even asked her (in all seriousness) if she held a shotgun licence. He was quite put out when I told him that if she did, he would be the first to know about it.
Trying to draw her pension at the post office was a nightmare. The staff did not seem to know from one week to the next what was acceptable in the way of identification. Of course, that was when they bothered to ask at all. British Telecom pulled the best stunt. They were surprisingly helpful over the phone but managed to refund an overpayment by making the cheque out to my father.
We got it sorted in the end but they really made it difficult for us and whoever thinks up these proscriptions clearly doesn't have a clue how real people live their lives.

They usually want proof of address (gas bill eg) and photo ID (driving licence or passport) Its part of the anti fraud thing to stop people money laundering.
The problem is, like you say, if you dont drive or havent been abroad, or still live at home and have no bills, or the bills are in your partners name, you have a problem. They want more ID for withdrawing a large amount to protect you from someone robbing you.
What you should do is complain to your MP. If enough people do we might be able to get a more suitable way of proving ID.
You could try getting a proof of age card from any off licence usually, but I dont know if they accept those as formal ID.

hey... I used to have a similar problem... What a pain & once even when I gave them my driving licence for id they still wouldn't let me take MY cash out of MY acc. I later complained & went to a different branch and got sorted, made an official complaint & got a little cash bonus in my acc and some wine delievery to my home... ok i guess but at the time it was very embarrasing, anyway...
Solution... Change Banks or Building Societies, I've changed and have been with my new bank for several years now, if i need to withdraw that little extra from over the counter i just give them some numbers from my pin, so no passport, no driving licence, no credit cards etc for extra id needed.
best of luck

when you apply for a passport you have to supply your birth certificate as a means of identity, plus a photo signed by someone who is of good standing in the community who knows you.
Back to the original question, in these days of identity theft it is only right that the bank should ask for correct identity from you, would you be happy if they just gave your money away?? No i didn't think you would.
But you should be able to come to some arrangement with your local branch where you are paying all this money in as to the identity they will accept

There must be some sort of official I.D you can get to sort this problem out.
A provisional drivers licence for example.
Photo I.D. is the best and quickest way.
If you had to give I.D in the first instance, why cant that same evidence be used again?
If I needed my money Id find a way!!!

When you apply for a passport you provide a birth certificate and signed photos by a lawyer or doctor or such and you get a passport. that is why the people doing the fraud can have up to 20 identities.

They think you are a money launderer. Well actually they don't but the nanny state has made them suspect everyone. Like nowadays an accountant who has the slightest suspicion about you has to report you or he can be struck off.

You can get a state I.D., looks like a drivers license and it is proof of who you are and don't go to bank, they are first class crooks, go to a Credit Union and open an account..your world will be much better if you do...
