I'm assuming you're based in the UK...

There is a reason that iguanas are the most dumped lizard in the UK and that is due to their unpredictable temperament and the fact they can inflict serious injuries to owners. A lot of what is common knowledge to me is not passed on to prospective owners through pet shops.

It is breeding season at the moment and my female iguana is currently looking for a place to lay her (unfertilised) eggs and her behaviour towards me at the moment is extremely vicious. As she is wrecking her vivarium in her attempts to get out/dig a nest I am letting her roam the house, but problems are arising when our paths meet. I am aware of this and deal with it accordingly.

My male iguana is also in season and desperate to get to the female to breed (not a chance) and as I am about to start my period this is increasing the level of his behaviour towards me due to my hormonal levels.

If your girlfriend is not used to the behaviour of iguanas then I can understand her reacting badly to an angry iguana, especially of that size!

Somebody mentioned jealousy I think and got lots of "bad answers". It actually could be jealousy if the iguana is used to you handling it. My male iguana hates my partner and will try to attack him if he is in the room as well. He does not do this to my female friends.

A really good site to check out is:

www.anapsid.org

Melissa Kaplan really knows her stuff and she also has a book called Iguanas for Dummies which delves deeply into the psychology of their behaviour. See if you can get a copy, but there is a lot of behavioural stuff on the site too.

she might be in season and gets more aggressive during that time. Also iguanas are very territorial and she may not like having another female there. Ive got 3 iguanas and the male is a lot more docile and calm around my gf. rescuing an animal is always a good thing, but you never know the history or what exactly you are getting yourself into. you should try to talk to a reptile vet. also get a VERY large enclosure for her as she is quite big and keep her there while your gf is there and she can then come out when she is gone. Im very sorry to hear about this situation I hope things work out.

What did you do to your girlfriend to make her come up with a story like that to get away? :P

I'm not buying the iguana busted through the door, but during mating season a female iguana will get territorial over females.

Good thing you didn't have a male, he would have went for you and tried to grab your girlfriend by the neck with his mouth.

This should calm down in time if you handle the ig regularly...for all of those who have hard to handle rescue iguanas.

happy to say, iguanas CAN get 5ft, some OVER 5ft, do some reasearch BEFORE making a statement like that!

Iguanas need small room sized cages (about 8ft long x 6ft wide x 8ft tall), UV lights, basking area's, and LOTS of attentin.....

most iguana owners say something along the lines of "you don't own the iguana, the iguana owns you".

Males AND females can become territorial, and can become aggressive, that tail will seriously HURT you should they whip it at you, even going as far as to split open your arm. Their bite hurts and they do the "alligator death roll", which is a P.I.T.A especially when you try to cut their nails.....

Socilize it more, or take it back to the shelter you got it from, cause it sounds like you don't know what you are doing.

I handle my son's 10 year old male iguana regulary. He can get aggressive at certain times of the year. My son has owned him since he was a baby. He has been bitten my son, on occasions, but, we have learned through experience, books, internet etc how to interpret signs of aggression, fear etc.
Saying that, I have never been bitten!!
I treat the lizard, as I do all animals, with respect. I move slowly and confidently, talking to him quietly with no sudden movements. I'm guessing your girlfriend was noisy, flapping about and acting like an immature idiot. If I were you I would read up and study iguanas, respect his space, but give him lots of loving attention. Then dump your girlfriend and find one who cares about the creatures we share our world with. Loud, -look at me, I'm scared, boo hoo- types are generally more in love with themselves, than their boyfriends anyway. Good Luck.

Funny you should say that. My daughter is dating a guy with two iguanas. She hates them, so I'm thinking her situation is the exact reverse. She'd like to kill the iggies. I've always thought there's something strange about people who want to keep iguanas. I mean, it's not as though you can give em a quick cuddle or anything is it?

If this story is true, it seems like you need to do even basic research on the pets that you're bringing home. Iguanas, especially poorly socialized ones, are well known for their aggressiveness.

Iguanas dont get that big... (or at least I've never seen or heard of one that big) Sheesh GET RID OF IT!!! NOW!! use ur commen sense, dude. get rid of it, or get rid of the girlfriend. ur choice. i personally like the getting rid of the iguana. but its not up to me, now is it. i also think that if u keep it, ur girl will break up with u, and u'll probly die. form the iguana. (or maybe the girl, if shes tempermental) was your girlfriend being mean to the iguana? it may be the iguana is in love with you and is jealous of your gf might be jealous , keep her away from kids
