I have a 1991 Ford F-150 that has a 5spd M5R2(Mazda) 2WD transmission that jumps out of fifth gear. What are the most common causes for it to do this. It runs fine in all other gears.

It will move the shifter from the fifth gear position into neutral. It will stay in gear as long as you hold it and don't load up the engine. But when you get to hill,it will shove the shifter out of your hand and into neutral.

The 5th gear syncronizer ring is worn out, and/or you have a bent shifter fork.

The 1991 Ford F150 with the 4.9L I6 is actually a 300 cubic inch engine. THe next size up that Ford made for that year was a 5.0L which is best known for being the powerplant for the Mustang GT also known as the Ford 302 engine. The I6 is an extremely strong low torque monster great for everyday use and trailering. The rear shackle to the leaf spring is going to be cheapest at your local salvage yard. Best bet is to call around and ask questions. Good Luck.

Worn out "fixator" balls and/or shaft holes the fork slides on. You will need to replace the shaft and likely shifting fork. Not a do-it-yourself proposition.

stay out of 5th ,& go get the tranny done at AAMCO, if you use 5th, it might lock up & leave you stuck somewhere. I got stuck that way! 5th gear is where all the filings end up.
