You start with 4 acres. 1/2 acre is planted with beans. That means he has 3 1/2 acres left.

He planted 1/3 of that with lettuce.

1/3 of 3 1/2 is the same as saying 1/3 * 7/2 =x or x=7/6 acre used up with lettuce,

If 1/3 was used for lettuce, then that leaves 2/3 * 7/2 to plant which is

2/3 * 7/2 = 14/6 = 2 2/6 = 2 1/3 acre left for planting something else.

there is 4 acres total

he uses up 1/2 acre with beans
so that leaves 3.5 (7/2) acres

he plants 1/3 of the remaining with lettuce
1/3 *7/2 = 7/6 (1.1666) acres
so that leaves 7/2 - 7/6 = 21/6 - 7 /6 = 14/6 = 7/3 (2.33) acres left

well
if he has 4 acres.. + half is used.. then he has 2 acres.
but then he uses a third of whats left..
so he has .666 acres left of his garden.
