Yes, they are still little enough to not understand why only the baby is getting a present. Something small is fine.

I think that's a great idea to keep the first child from feeling left out and resentful of the new baby. Also, make sure pictures are taken of the first child as well as the new baby, and bring out and display pictures of the older child as a baby.

I did! I made my son who was 8 at the time a t-shirt and had it personalized from me and his newborn sister. I also got him a few odds and ends. Think about their feelings. They were the center of attention then this new thing comes and the attention shifts to them. I did the same thing w/ my 1st son and my daughter when my last son was born. I just wanted them to feel special too.
Good luck-- Soul (proud mama of 3-12,4,2)

I generally get each older child a doll. That way they have their own "baby" to take care of. Probablely a child over a certain age is too old for this but mine aren't lol.

Yes I did because the baby will be getting a lot of stuff and they will feel left out It really helped my son. Also my friends get him presents too when the brought stuff for the baby.

I usually do so he/she doesn't feel left out - but I will usually say it's for becoming a new big brother/sister.
