The fish may not be sexually mature yet. The only way to tell sex of GF is in early spring males grow pimples on there gill covers and leading edge of their pectoral fins. Females may spit eggs from their behind but other than that there is no way to tell. Some people will tell you if they have long fins they are a boy, or if they are big and fat they are a girl, etc, but that is simply not true. My female has long fins and is on the skinny side and my one of my males is huge and fat with short fins. Both sexes do change color, that's regulated by DNA and breeding. Quality GF (expensive show fish) are bred not to change color but the lower quality ones often do. Sometimes its lighting and food that will change or enhance the color. Green water tends to make the colors richer as well as fish kept out doors tend to have stunning colors. The little fish you won't be able to sex for probably 2 or 3 years. The bigger one maybe next year. Don't worry you can't make them have babies. They will eat their eggs. Breeding is for professionals not you and I. Goldfish is a lucrative business with many secrets kept by the breeders, it facinating. Google up "Jackie Chan goldfish" and you will see what I mean. He is the only one who is breeding the rare types you see in books and mags. No he's not the kung-fu Jackie Chan. Good luck and welcome to the hobby! www.goldfishconnection.com is a great place to start!

I was up all night on this one.

Usually you can tell, as the dorsal fin, this is the fin on the underside of the fish will be different bettween the genders. the very back fin on the males will be much thinner and as a much lesser angle.

And the bigger one is a girl
Yours is a girl!

Just search for "sexing goldfish" or "sexing comet goldfish" online. You should find some helpful diagrams.

Not 100% positive, but I've heard that the bigger ones are usually female.
