nail polish remover "melts" the acrylic nails. so, im not sure you would want to use that on them. Its good for getting them off though!

Any polish remover will work for you. Acetone is used to remove acrylic nails, but it takes quite a bit soaking to do that. So taking polish off with polish remover that has acetone in it will not hurt your acrylics. (As a manicurist, I use straight acetone to remove polish all the time.) You might need to buff the acrylic nails after removing polish. Just use #400 wet/dry sandpaper.

Make sure you have non-acetone nail polish remover because you'll soon find out regular nail polish remover makes your acrylics dissolve.... and it shouldn't be a problem to polish them a diff color.... you might want to try a clear coat just like on regular nails before you put the color, especially if its a dark color you don't want your nails to tint.

I get acrylic nails all the time & change color constantly. The trick is using non-acetone nail polish remover. That way it won't destroy the acrylic nail.
