I get spam at my Hotmail and want to know how to identify the real spammer. I know you can use an IP address and go to a whois database site but there is more than one IP address. Like "Received from... (000.00.0.000)" then another line just like it. How do I know which IP address is used by the real spammer?

You can't find out through the IP address in this instance.

You see, spammers use something called an "anonymizer" program, which changes their IP addresses every few seconds. Under normal cirumstances you could track someone with their IP, but because theirs is changed so rapidly to random addresses, you can never track them. I know it stinks, but there's nothing you can do about it except get the best spam blocker you can find and hope for the best.

The spammer's IP address is in the field called Received, but you have to look down the list since there may be several Received fields. There may also be a Received-SPF field as well, which will have more detailed information about the spammer as well, which will also have the IP address, usually in this form "identity=mailfrom; client-ip=75.66.120.176;" (this is from an actual spam message I got). In this case, it came from someone in New Jersey.

Now, a note about these addresses. Since a lot of spammers like to use hijacked computers, a good portion of spam messages will come from people who use cable internet or shared DSL services.

However, there is still PLENTY of spam that comes from the origin point unchanged. You can filter out those messages based on the IP addresses because they come from the following countries:

Nigeria
Saudi Arabia
Iran
Iraq
Israel
India
Russia
China

There you go! Good luck!

if you use an isp or provider for your mail you can provide them with the Ip addresses and ask them to be added to the email blacklist, the server will then automatically delete or reject mails from them.

give it up, unless you are a trained hacker you'll never find them.
