I was under the impression that Amedinijad was more of a figurehead than anything in Iran and that the real power lies with Khameini. So why is the media focusing so much on Amedinijad?

The president of Iran is the head of government. Laws passed by the parliament and policies created by the president need to be approved by the religious courts. The courts therefore have ultimate authority, but they don't create laws and policies. Their role is merely to react to the laws created by the government.

The structure is similar to the Canadian system of their Supreme Court ruling on laws passed by parliament BEFORE they take effect. In the US the Supreme Court only gets involved if a lawsuit is filed challenging a law. It's possible in the US for laws to be enforced for decades before the Court decides they're unlawful.

Amedinejad does not make a move without the approval of the Supreme Leader, aka the Grand Ayatollah. So while he is elected, his mere nomination was orchestrated by the Grand Ayatollah who is trying to steer the country further to the right undermining all the moderation that had been achieved by the previous Iranian president.
The president is the second highest ranking government official in the nation
The Supreme Leader is Iran's top decision maker. According to Iran's constitution, the supreme leader is responsible for supervising the "general policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran" and directs all the country's foreign and domestic policy. The supreme leader also controls the military and Iran's intelligence operations. He alone has the power to declare war.

The Supreme Leader operates behind the scenes and the President is the mouth piece Amedinejad is not as popular in his country because of his hardline stances especially his crackdown on moderate Iranian youth. He gets support from his people the same way our President had everyone rallying behind him from both sides after 9/11.
Every time the West ratchets up the rhetoric, the people rallying around their flag even if they have to hold their noses to support him. They are supporting their country.

yeah... pretty much... you can never really tell what Iran is really doing... and when they are letting Amed run his mouth....

sometimes he seems more like the "master of ceremonies" than president... a showman used to stir up the crowd... but you don't really know if he even has a clue what he is talking about...

from what I understand... he has ZERO control over the military and that's entirely in control of the clerics... he has some control over more day to day book-keeping issues of the nation though...

the media focuses on him because: he is the only one talking... you can't quote a supreme leader that doesn't say anything... so you have to quote the guy that's talking...

actual power doesn't matter to the media... the loudest fool talking does though...

Possibly because Amedinijad is more dangerous than any religious cleric in Iran. Here is a man who strives for a nuclear bomb while at the same time saying Israel has no right to exist, and that there was no holocaust.

Yeah, he is, and I understand that he is not too happy with how the President is escalating things unnecessarily.
