What bothers me is that we seem so insensitive to violence .... is it so diffi-

It was not always this way.
What happened?

I haven't studied the Baha'i' faith as much as I want to ( and I will study more ). But what I have read was very enlightening. In some ancient texts it is said that Jesus studied it. I don't know if it is true or not. But there are great similarities in some of Jesus teachings and the Baha'i' faith. While I am and will remain a Christian I will say that the world would be a better place if more people took their sayings to heart (instead of thinking they do, like most Christians today). Whether it be Jesus or Baha'i'.

Its a variety of things. First you have to remember is that an ignorant people are easier to manipulate. The classes that govern the USA need an ignorant populace. Otherswise how can they fuerther their agenda with such moronic excuses as the WMD and Bush speeches?
Elementary and High Schools are not good and to make matters worst University is only available to those that can pay the high prices. Of course there are alternatives but they are junk degrees. Try to become a doctor , pay and work..good luck. To make matters worst the elite topped the ignorance with religiosity. God fearing self rightous ignorant people are the most dangerous and breed violence.
Other causes of violence is the ignorance and poverty that minorities are subject to. These subclasses are subject to social violence in a daily basis.
The racial and class divisions as divised by the ruling class are also another source of ignorance adn violence.
There are many other reasons, but these are the main ones.

When people take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded them and teachers are required to teach proven methods that work such as phonics and not some unproven theory that someone thinks is better but has never been proven to work we will become a nation of well educated people.

As I recall we are a very peace loving people. I don't think this situation over seas started because we flew airplanes into someone elses financial center.

When Americans stop voting for Republicans.

I heard somewhere that republicans do not believe in Big Government, where the government do not tell Americans what to do and controlled their lives. If that's true, then they sure love controlling the lives of people in other countries. The 2 Bushes butchered Iraq to sell democracy. Reagan "liberated" eastern Europe from communism.

Republicans do not want to govern America and its people, they want to tell people outside America how they should be governed.

Hooray democracy through hypocrisy

Well you have now a bunch of well educated lawyers in Washington and look where we are at. We elected a bunch of people who don't know beans from apple butter about world peace. We need to start with a fresh crew aboard this ship we call the United States. It's a sorry and sad affair that they have gotten into.

... well... a social change is almost always a slow change...

with periods of great growth and periods of recession...

I mean... if you think about it though... only 50 or so years ago... black people couldn't vote or use the same bathrooms in much of America... women barely worked... and few went to college...

we've progressed... but there are still points of shame...

and violence will still be with us for a while... we still live in a violent world... in many countries, it's still all they know... and to a degree, we're fighting our genetics, which can make some prone to aggression and violence after centuries of "strongest man wins" wars and conquests...

it will take thousands of years... of slow and steady progression with no major hiccups...

When America gets rid of George Bush and his clan. I travel the world and am not American, and from what i understand, most of the world thinks that Bush is an absolute idiot who meddles in everyone Else's' affairs and is not looking to fix the U.S. of it's own problems. I think the U.S. has alot to offer the world, but you guys are soooo uneducated about what goes on outside the U.S. Maybe more people should travel more and learn about the world.

when the average peace loving american votes for peace loving leaders to pass legislation to this effect. Americans are a nation of willless american Idol watchers. We dont educate people in this country because the leaders recognize that in a democracy education is its downfall. The first widely recognized democracy Greece fell apart because no one wanted to go to war and they lost the ability to defend and conquer land.
