i have tried looking on the web, but i can only find farms that give you a few workers that will tunnel and then die within a couple weeks.

You can't, it's against Federal Law, unless you have a license from the USDA.

Plus digging your own will kill the entire colony of ants.

They aren't allowed to sell Queen Ants in the US. Really your best bet is to get a shovel and start digging in an ant hill. Don't put a strange queen in with the workers you got - they will probably attack her. A queen will be much larger than the worker ants

Alternatively you can keep replenishing your anthill with workers from a backyard hill.

If you find that you have started digging in a fire ant hill, a spray with the hose will get them off (you may have to strip out of your pants if they get up the legs of your jeans). A mixture of dilute clorox will alleviate the pain from the stings. (Yes I know this from personal experiance)

Lift up large flat rocks, dig in anthills.

queens = ants with wings. During certain times of the year here in fall the wall of my friends house is covered in queens when we are over for a barbecue. It's pretty gross actually to eat and see all those queens (attracted to his porchlight)

You need to look for them outside, you need to identify different types of ants and distinguish which is a worker/soldier and the queen.
