So that you can OWN something
1.A legacy to pass onto your kids.
2.SO you can be your own boss (paint rooms several different colors etc.)
3.Tax deductions.
4.In some cases owning is actually cheaper then renting
5. Privacy and more autonomy so that you can customize your surroundings (you can live in the woods if you choose or have a pet or whatever)
6. you can build equity
7. impress friends
there are several more reasons
these are just a few that come to mind.

It costs you to live anywhere. You can either pay rent or interest. At least if you buy you have the opportunity of getting something to show for it one day.

Because you could pay as much as a mortgage would cost you in rent, and have nothing to show for it!
I bought my first house for £31,000 ten years ago and just sold if for £100k..... gave me a nice deposit for my new home, and money left for a nice car and holiday.
