How can the voters pick Michael Irvin over Art Monk? Monk only has more receptions in his career than 100% of the players in the hall or currently elligible for voting. He has been passed by Rice and a couple others, but at one point in his career he was the all time leading wide receiver. And he did it with mediocre quarterbacks throwing to him. For me, the Hall has lost all credibility. There's a case for Irvin, but he shouldn't have gotten in over Monk--straight up, I'd pick Monk over Irvin any day.

No, I am not kidding you about mediocre qb's. Joe Theismann was the best, and he'll be in the Hall of Fame as a broadcaster before he makes it as a player, LOL. After that, who is there? Doug Williams? Well, he did have a gun, but he was at the end of the career when he came to DC. Mark Rypien? The only Quarterback worse than Trent Dilfer to win the Super Bowl. Jay Shrader? One of the worst to ever man the position. Who else? Sean Humphries, but he was fragile.

I agree politics have a lot to do with it.

Here are the comparative stats:

Receptions:
Irvin - 750
Monk - 940

Yards:
Irvin - 11,904
Monk - 12,721

Yards per Reception:
Irvin - 15.8
Monk - 13.5

TDs:
Irvin - 65
Monk - 68

Pro Bowls:
Irvin - 5
Monk - 3

Superbowls:
Irvin - Won 3
Monk - Won 3 (although he did not play in Superbowl XVII due to injury)

Other Honorable Mentions:
Irvin - Picked for NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990's.
Monk - Picked for NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1980's

While the stats are comparatively close, I believe it came down to the Pro Bowl and Superbowl statistics. There was also a lot of pressure put on the voters from Hall of Famers Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith.

Monk may be a better receiver than Irvin and Irvin definitely had more off Field problems but Monk was a total jack-*** when it came to the media and fans. As far as monk having mediocre QB's throwing him the ball...are you kidding me?
There's no doubt Monk belongs in th Hall, I think Irvin getting in this year opened the door for Monk next year for sure.

No doubt you have a strong point on Monk over Irvin. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that this is what it's all about.

I'd guess it has everything to do with the blatant play of politics and payola becoming more prominent in the Hall's selection process.

Another great American Sports Institution conforms (surrenders) to the reality of modern day greed and corruption.

I believe that Art Monk has some real "old school" character. The kind you want when starting a ball club. Unfortunately, I think the only thing that makes Irvin go in the HOF is that he has superbowl rings and Monk doesn't.

I am not a Dallas fan and I don't like Irvin as a person...
in fact i like Art Monk as a football player.

I hear you about Monk, but Irvin was only left out as punishment for all the crap he pulled during his playing career. Art will get in one of these days though. The biggest outrage is Derrick Thomas getting snubbed again. At least Thuman got in, but no Andre?? Change the rules and let em all in.

Think the main reason Irvin got in this year is because Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith were complaining last year that Irvin didn't make it. What a joke indeed!!

Fact -- Monk should have been in the HOF YEARS AGO!!!!!
Monk had class, dignity (unlike what Scottie said) and respect for the game and it's players!!!

You got a good point. Irvin was a great player for the cowboys but Monk was better and classier. Probably politics I guess.

certain, he truly benefits to be in. The huge receivers of immediately earnings from overwhelmingly effective regulations hostile to defenders. paintings Monk battled for balls lower back even as corners might want to draw close throughout receivers without drawing a flag. Now, if a nook taps the shoulder of a WR, that is a penalty. he's fifth all-time for receptions. he's ninth all-time for receiving yards. He owns about an excellent Bowl earrings. And, for sure, the consecutive-video games streak. both paintings Monk AND Henry Ellard should be in, in spite of no longer being superstars.

Well, if Art Monk would take a few style cues from Michael Irvin and begin dressing like a pimp maybe he'd get a little respect...well, that, and get a decent rapsheet...
